When Atlassian announced Thursday morning that it would cut 10 percent of its global workforce, other founders and tech industry insiders were surprised. Surprised the cuts weren’t deeper.
As a result, “I think we’re going to end up seeing many more waves of layoffs (at Atlassian),” says one founder.
While they sympathized with employees, industry officials have long viewed Atlassian as bloated: throwing lavish parties, hiring quickly and building a $1.4 billion office tower next to Sydney Central Station, all while allowing employees to work from anywhere.
