Testing Chipolo’s Bluetooth trackers with Google Find My Device

Chipolo and Pebblebee announced that their Google-compatible Airtag Alternatives are shipping today, with Chipolo’s Bluetooth trackers being the first to arrive for a hands-on review. The two should function similarly, but a more detailed comparison can be found in their guide. The initial impressions are based on setup and available options, with a plan to compare them to Pebblebee, Apple Airtags, and Samsung trackers in a comprehensive review later on.

The focus is on two Chipolo trackers: the ONE Point and the CARD Point. The ONE Point is a round tracker with a replaceable battery and a keyhole for attaching to keys or bags. On the other hand, the CARD Point is a slim, credit card-shaped tracker designed to fit in a wallet. It does not have a removable battery, but offers a 50% discount on replacements if recycled after the expected two-year battery life.

The setup process for the Chipolo trackers on a Pixel phone was quick and simple, similar to the fast pair feature for Bluetooth headphones. The Find My Device app allows users to track the locations of the trackers, check battery levels, play sounds, and share the device. The trackers emit a loud and distinct sound for easy location. However, directional search is not available due to the lack of Ultra-wideband (UWB) technology.

Additional features include modifying tracker names, assigning categories, and sharing trackers with others. The trackers can be linked to multiple Android phones, but require a PIN code verification from the original set-up phone when tracking on a new device. Testing in a small indoor environment showed promising Bluetooth range and sound volume, but real-world testing for reliability and ease of use will be conducted in the future.

The review will delve deeper into the performance of the Chipolo trackers in different scenarios, addressing questions on reliability, ease of tracking, network strength, and unknown tracker alerts. Stay tuned for the full comparison test and review.
