TechRound: Oracle Empowers AI and Cloud Computing Growth in Spain

Oracle, a leading American technology company, recently announced a massive investment of over one billion dollars in Spain. The investment will focus on advancing artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing technologies. In Europe, Oracle already has a strong presence, with cloud regions in countries like the United Kingdom, Germany, Switzerland, and the Netherlands, catering to various industries such as finance and healthcare. The new investment in Spain will involve establishing a third cloud region in Madrid over the next ten years to meet the increasing demand for Oracle’s services.

A “cloud region” refers to the physical location where public cloud resources are hosted, contrary to the belief that the cloud is a mystical storage realm. The Madrid Cloud Region aims to aid the migration of workloads for both public and private sector organizations, modernize applications, and ensure compliance with regulatory frameworks such as the Digital Operational Resilience Act and European Outsourcing Guidelines.

To ensure compliance with data privacy laws such as GDPR, Oracle needs to adhere to strict regulations like the Organic Law on Data Protection and the Law on Information Society Services in Spain. Additionally, cybersecurity requirements under the NIS Directive must be met to maintain a resilient infrastructure and promptly report security incidents. Oracle is partnering with Telefónica Spain to host the new cloud region, guaranteeing compliance with data residency and regulatory standards, especially in finance.

Albert Triola, Oracle Spain’s country manager, emphasizes the investment’s significance for Spanish businesses and public organizations in accelerating the adoption of cloud technologies, particularly in SMEs and the financial services sector, improving business resilience and performance. The investment is expected to create thousands of jobs, thereby benefiting the Spanish economy.

This investment aligns with Oracle’s global strategy to expand its cloud infrastructure worldwide, as seen in recent collaborations with Google Cloud and OpenAI. Oracle’s dedication to driving digital innovation and infrastructure development is further demonstrated by plans to invest over $8 billion in Japan over the next decade. Through strategic investments and partnerships, Oracle aims to lead in advancing AI and cloud technologies on a global scale.
