Technology companies are encouraged to label AI-generated content

Artificial intelligence developers have been told to “watermark” content so people can clearly see it is AI-generated content, as the government seeks to address concerns the technology is being used to mislead and harm Australians.

There is no legal requirement to label content as AI-generated, which has led to generated content being confused as real, known as deepfaking.

As guidance for developers and content creators, the federal government has recommended that AI content be “clearly identifiable” by including labels indicating that content was generated by AI or embedding information to trace the origin of content – a process known as watermarking, which is more difficult to manipulate or remove than labels.

It notes that transparency tools are particularly important when AI-generated content could be used to “adversely influence” people, and that they become more important the more AI is involved in the creation of the content.
