TechCrunch: Google’s AI NotebookLM now available in India, UK, and 200+ countries

Google has expanded the availability of its AI-powered note-taking assistant, NotebookLM, to more than 200 new countries, six months after its initial launch in the US. The platform, powered by Google’s multi-modal LLM Gemini 1.5 Pro, now supports users in countries like Australia, Brazil, Canada, India, and the United Kingdom, along with 208 other countries and territories. It has also been updated to support 108 languages for the interface and 38 languages for fonts and chat, allowing users worldwide to generate summaries and ask questions based on their documents.

NotebookLM, previously known as Project Tailwind and first introduced at Google I/O in 2023, uses AI to help users summarize documents, notes, and other sources. It differs from traditional chatbots by adhering to the source material provided by users. The platform can now extract content from Google Slides, web URLs, Google Docs, PDFs, and text files. It has also added online citations to provide supporting passages from sources and assists in generating FAQs, whitepapers, or study guides.

Google has seen early users integrate NotebookLM into their research and writing workflows, including creating hyperlocal newsletters, summarizing transcripts, and managing descriptions. The company emphasizes that user data uploaded to NotebookLM will remain private and not used for algorithm training. In addition, NotebookLM’s latest update includes Audio Overviews powered by the Gemini model for a podcast-style discussion and the ability to have up to 50 fonts and 500,000 words per source.

The global launch of NotebookLM positions it against other GenAI tools that provide similar services for a fee. Google’s ability to offer this service for free sets it apart as a competitive option for users seeking AI-based assistance with note-taking and summarization. Further integrations with popular note-taking apps like Evernote and Google Keep may be considered in the future as Google continues to enhance the platform’s functionality and user experience.
