IBM’s highly secretive database, Db2, has been a mainstay for 41 years and is still favored by major banks and retailers worldwide. Initially released in 1983, Db2 revolutionized relational databases and quickly became a dominant force in the mainframe market. Today, Db2 offers versions for both mainframes (z/OS) and Linux Unix and Windows (LUW), with the upcoming LUW v12 set to replace Tivoli System Automation with Pacemaker technology for improved cluster management.

One of the key features of Db2 v12 is the integration of AI, with an AI-powered query optimizer promising up to three times better performance compared to previous versions. Db2 specialist Craig Mullins noted that this optimization could revolutionize query performance, but organizations will need to request it specifically as it will be disabled by default. Additionally, Db2 v12 will offer enhanced support for AI through Watsonx, enabling AI capabilities within SQL and providing insights into SQL data.

Despite IBM not actively promoting Db2 as a growth product, major clients like JP Morgan Chase, HSBC, and Bank of America continue to rely on it. interest in Db2 remains strong among users, with a noticeable shift towards younger conference attendees, highlighting the enduring relevance of a database that is over 35 years old.
