TCL was never shy Presentation of his advertising concepts at trade fairs, and this year is no different; The company is showing (virtually) some of these prototypes at CES 2021. Given that there is absolutely no guarantee that these concepts will ever hit the market, they nonetheless offer an entertaining glimpse into a possible future for display technology. First up is a mobile device with an AMOLED screen that can expand a 6.7-inch display up to 7.8 inches. According to TCL, the device is less than 10 mm thick and has a bending radius of 3 mm.

TCL calls this a scrollable display, although there is no externally obvious scrolling action.

A similar concept appears in one of the unintentionally funnier promotional videos we’ve seen so far at CES this year. It’s an expandable display concept that scrolls like a scroll or on two pages an “I will steal the declaration of independence” That is a technical term.

According to TCL, the screen is also thinner, even at 0.18mm thick. The company is trying to bring home the space-saving benefits of this concept with a video of a hiker pulling it out of a pocket on the way. Unfortunately, it looks about as authentic as Our favorite folding devices for science fiction to do.

TCL appears to have a working prototype version of this technology, although it is smaller and doesn’t look quite as robust as the walking video suggests. And while the company says they’ll be launching a foldable / flexible product this year, we put our money into a regular old folding phone – that’s about it I’ve been working on one for a while now – instead of one of these concepts.
