Consolidating federal data centers and encouraging cloud computing adoption are intended to help sustainability, but little is known about the impact of these measures on federal energy use, according to a state watchdog. Acquisition leaders are seeking to incorporate sustainability guidelines into government procurement practices and will seek guidance from a new federal advisory council being established to address climate and sustainability issues in federal procurement.

“When we start talking about things like moving to the cloud, we’re not just talking about the capabilities and the scalability, we’re also starting to build the importance of sustainability into it,” Laura Stanton, assistant commissioner of the General Services Administration for the information technology category, said at an industry event on Tuesday.
