If you want a Windows laptop that runs Nvidia software natively, Microsoft’s new Surface Laptop Ultra is the first to try. Preorders opened in the US on October 7 at $2,599, with shipping from October 16, per Windows Central. The top configuration costs $5,899. UK and European buyers will wait longer, and early driver reports suggest that may not be a bad thing.

The hardware

The laptop uses Nvidia’s RTX Spark, an ARM-based chip built with MediaTek. ARM chips are the kind found in phones and Apple’s Macs, and they usually run cooler than Intel or AMD parts. Microsoft offers an 18-core and a 20-core version, with 24GB to 128GB of shared memory and 512GB to 2TB of storage. We covered the chip itself in our RTX Spark explainer.

The 15-inch mini-LED screen runs at 3270×2180 and 120Hz. Microsoft quotes up to 2,000 nits of peak HDR brightness. The aluminium body is 18mm thick and weighs up to 2.5kg, so this is not a thin-and-light machine.
