New research has shown that Google’s AI-generated overviews have seen significant changes since their initial launch. The study, which analyzed 100,000 keywords, found that the frequency of AI summaries has significantly decreased, but they are now more detailed when they do appear.
The study also looked at which topics and industries are most likely to receive an AI overview, as well as how AI snippets interact with other search features like featured snippets and ads.
The frequency of AI summaries has dropped by 52% compared to January levels, with only 8% of searches triggering an AI overview. This decrease suggests that Google is taking a more measured approach to ensure the accuracy and reliability of AI-generated answers.
Despite the reduced frequency, the AI summaries now provide more detailed information, with an average text length increase of almost 25% to around 4,342 characters. However, they now link to fewer sources on average, with just four links after expanding the snippet.
The study also found that the likelihood of getting an AI overview varies across different industries, with searches related to relationships, food and drink, and technology being the most common. Sensitive areas like healthcare, legal, and news had a low rate of AI summaries appearing.
Longer search queries with ten words were found to be more likely to generate an AI overview, suggesting that AI summaries are most useful for complex information needs. Additionally, search terms with lower search volumes and cost per click were also more likely to show AI summaries.
Other findings from the research include the fact that 4.5% of AI summaries appear alongside featured snippets, and 87% now coexist with ads, compared to the previous 73%. This could increase competition for advertising space.
Overall, the research has implications for SEO efforts, suggesting that there is a reduced risk of traffic losses due to fewer AI overviews triggering organic listing downgrades. It also highlights the most impacted niches, such as relationships, food, and technology, and emphasizes the need for comprehensive and detailed content beyond what the AI overviews cover.
While the number of AI summaries has decreased recently, it is important to monitor developments closely and adjust strategies accordingly. The future of AI overviews is sure to continue evolving, so staying informed and adapting to changes will be crucial for success in SEO efforts.
