Study by IBM reveals that sports fans are eager for AI-driven digital interactions

IBM has utilized generative AI, particularly with its WatsonX platform, to offer various features related to Wimbledon and The Masters such as automated commentary, insights, and generated highlights. This reflects the increasing demand from sports fans for data analytics, with a recent study by IBM showing that a majority of fans believe data analytics will enhance the sports they consume. The study found that over 64% of global sports fans aged 18-54 see data analytics as a positive addition, and 50% expect AI to improve the viewing experience through real-time updates and personalized content.

IBM’s generative AI has been instrumental in creating features like the “Catch Me Up” function for Wimbledon, although it faced criticism for factual errors on players’ cards that sparked conversation on social media. The study highlighted real-time updates and personalized content as key areas where the sports industry can leverage AI to enhance the viewing experience, with 34% of respondents prioritizing real-time updates and 29% preferring personalized content.

Younger fans, particularly those aged 18-29, are most likely to see the benefits of AI in sports, with 58% of this group believing that the technology can enhance their experience. Social media plays a crucial role in engaging these younger fans, with 56% of fans turning to social media for additional sports content. The study, conducted in May by Morning Consult through an online survey of over 18,000 individuals in 10 countries, emphasizes the importance of AI-powered partners in generating instant highlights for sharing across various platforms.

Overall, the sports industry is increasingly turning to AI and data analytics to meet the growing demands of sports fans for personalized and engaging viewing experiences. IBM’s use of generative AI in delivering features for major sporting events like Wimbledon and The Masters showcases the potential for technology to enhance the way fans interact with and consume sports content. As fans continue to seek more data-driven insights and personalized content, AI is poised to play a significant role in shaping the future of sports entertainment.
