State Agency Delays Demolition of IBM Endicott Site

The demolition project of abandoned IBM buildings in Endicott is ready to begin pending final approval from the State Historic Preservation Office. $6 million in funding was secured in December 2022 for the project, with hopes that demolition could start soon. Logistical issues, such as burying power lines, have been resolved, and Broome County Executive Jason Garnar is waiting for the state agency to give the green light.

The county executive expressed that the buildings are in poor condition and uninhabitable, making repurposing them unfeasible. The Huron Campus owners are eager to proceed with the demolition to clear the way for redevelopment. Governor Kathy Hochul is supportive of the project, and the demolition of the 550,000 square feet of unused space is crucial for the site’s development.

Preparations for the demolition are underway, and Gorick Construction workers are getting the property ready for the planned work. Once the necessary approvals are obtained, the demolition will proceed, creating a 10-acre shovel-ready site for future development. The timeline for the demolition is dependent on the response from the State Historic Preservation Office, with expectations of approval in the coming weeks.
