US President Donald Trump announced this in January 2025 OpenAI, Oracle and SoftBank would invest $500 billion and are building several data centers in the USA as part of their AI initiative “Stargate”. But instead of pushing forward with AI expansion immediately, there was a tug of war between the three partners, according to a report from The information.

OpenAI initially wanted to move forward on its own and therefore owned the data centers. This would help secure one’s future without depending on external cloud providers, which can be more expensive in the long run.
