In January 2024, AWS introduced Migration Hub Journeys to help guide and accelerate application migration and modernization. This tool provides streamlined planning, execution, and tracking through task-based templates with expert guidance, specialized tools, and cross-team collaboration. The goal is to seamlessly migrate and modernize applications, and now, new migration journey templates are available for AWS for VMware. These templates aim to help quickly migrate and optimize VMware workloads from on-premises, other clouds, or VMware Cloud on AWS to native AWS services.

AWS Migration Hub Journeys is designed to template migration projects and coordinate efforts between internal and external project collaborators. It provides a comprehensive migration journey to help users execute and track migrations from start to finish by bringing together experts, processes, and tools. Key features include migration planning, prescriptive guidance, execution and tracking, and collaboration and governance.

The new templates for VMware-based workloads to AWS are aligned with the AWS migration methodology and provide a pipeline of tasks to facilitate efficient migration to AWS. The templates guide users through assessing the current state of infrastructure, understanding the current license estate, creating landing zones with necessary controls, and migrating resources to AWS cloud-native services. The VMware to AWS EC2 migration template divides tasks into phases and modules to provide guidance for a specific task for efficient execution and tracking. Users can also customize journeys to their needs, collaborate with others, and track all steps required for a successful migration.

The AWS Application Migration Service (MGN) is recommended for rehosting VMware-based workloads in the AWS Cloud. It supports both agent-based and agentless approaches to replicating servers from on-premises to AWS. The tools and subtasks in Migration Hub Journeys templates guide users through the migration process using these methods, enabling them to track all steps, owners, schedules, issues, and required actions for a successful migration.

Overall, AWS Migration Hub Journeys templates for AWS for VMware aim to facilitate collaboration, efficient planning and execution of migrations, and ensure a smooth transition to the cloud. By leveraging AWS’s global infrastructure, customers can benefit from scalability, enhanced security, increased reliability, and improved performance. Users can sign up with their AWS Builder ID to start their migration journey and access workshops to gain a better understanding of Journeys and its benefits. Additional resources are also available to help with migrations for VMware workloads to AWS.
