Hackers linked to China’s Ministry of State Security infiltrated the networks of Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co and IBM, using their access to hack into their clients’ computers. The attacks were part of the Cloudhopper campaign, targeting technology service providers to steal their clients’ secrets. While the specific MSPs targeted were not identified, IBM and HPE confirmed awareness of the reported attacks and took measures to protect their data and customers. The attacks date back to at least 2014, with breaches at both companies lasting for weeks and months. The FBI and Department of Homeland Security declined to comment, as did the U.S. Department of Justice and the Chinese embassy in Washington. A British government spokeswoman also declined to comment on the identities of the affected companies or the impact of the breaches, citing potential commercial consequences. The attacks highlight the significant threat faced by MSPs, as compromises in their networks can lead to breaches of multiple customers. IBM and HPE continue to work on securing their networks against future threats.
