Cyber experts are issuing a warning about a new malware campaign that impersonates Microsoft and Google Chrome in an attempt to steal money from unsuspecting users. The malicious campaign, discovered by Proofpoint Online Security Company, involves fake browser updates and phishing emails that trick victims into downloading harmful files which then give cybercriminals access to cryptocurrency, sensitive files, and personal information. This sophisticated new malware technique was first observed in the ClearFake campaign in early April and has since targeted thousands of organizations worldwide. The malware uses deceptive HTML files in phishing emails to execute harmful PowerShell scripts that redirect cryptocurrency transactions to the perpetrators. The fake error messages used in this campaign imitate legitimate notifications from OneDrive and the operating system, providing the victim with a false problem and solution to prompt immediate action without considering the risk. This complex threat landscape highlights the need for users to be vigilant and cautious when using digital services.
