Google has recently notified G Suite free edition users that their additional storage subscription has been canceled, but they can still keep the storage for free. This move comes after Google renamed G Suite to Workspace in 2020, requiring users to migrate to new subscriptions. Some long-time G Suite users, whose accounts were more than a decade old, faced challenges with this migration.
After facing backlash, Google eventually allowed former G Suite users to keep their accounts for personal use and purchase additional storage through a separate subscription. The company has also been phasing out old versions of G Suite apps over the years. Starting in June 2022, Google stopped offering older G Suite storage add-ons for purchase, leading to the cancellation of subscriptions for some users, who were then offered free storage in return.
A user shared an email notification they received from Google Play confirming the cancellation of their storage subscription for their Google Account at work or school. Despite being unsubscribed, users will not see a change in their storage limit and do not need to take any action. A Google spokesperson confirmed this change, ensuring that customers will keep their storage allocation and be able to continue using their existing account. The change also applies to migrated users who still have an additional storage subscription through Google Play, with their individual storage not being merged with shared storage.
While former G Suite users can currently enjoy the benefit of free storage, it is unclear when Google may decide to discontinue this offer. Until then, users can make use of their free storage allocation.
