Social media is populist and polarizing; AI could be the opposite

From the Arab Spring uprisings to the continued electoral gains of the radical right and left to rising anti-science sentiment, the last 15 years have been marked by waves of populism, polarization and a loss of trust in experts, expertise and the establishment.

Many factors contribute to these trends, but as I have argued, one of the key factors is the dramatic change in our information environment caused by the rise of social media.
