WhatsApp’s rivals received a massive boost after the messaging app announced on Wednesday that it would Let users share some personal information with its parent company Facebook.

WhatsApp said users would have to consent to Facebook and its subsidiaries collecting WhatsApp data – including phone numbers and locations – or losing access to the app before February 8. WhatsApp has since made it clear that this only affects users outside of the European Union and the UK, stating that the change “will not affect the privacy of your messages with friends or family in any way”.

Show data from the app analysis company Sensor Tower signal, a competing encrypted messaging service, saw a huge surge in user numbers following the announcement of WhatsApp.

“From January 6th to 10th, around 7.5 million installations were installed in the entire App Store and on Google Play,” a representative of the sensor tower told Insider.

This corresponds to an increase of 4,200% compared to the previous week.
