Shaking hands isn’t enough: Why Australia needs to get tough on AI

Dario Amodei spent Wednesday in Canberra, where he signed the first memorandum of understanding under the National AI Plan with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, met Treasurer Jim Chalmers and told MPs at the Anthropic Futures Forum that democracies must maintain the military and technological edge over autocracies. But what Australia got was still a non-binding handshake.

Every major AI company in the world wants to build in Australia right now. They need our land, our power grid, our political stability and our geography. We should negotiate the way we know how. Instead, we settle for shaking hands.
