Senior AI officials join Australian government agencies

According to an AI plan for the Australian Public Service (APS) released by the federal government on Wednesday, senior artificial intelligence officers will be appointed in every federal agency in 2026 as generative AI brings a “fundamental shift” in government operations.

The plan will see every government employee given access to generative AI tools as well as guidance and training on how to use them properly, Labor said.

Newly appointed chief AI officers will be expected to “drive adoption and advocate for strategic change across their agencies,” the plan says.

This included identifying how AI could be used to improve service delivery, improve policies and allocate resources more efficiently, she added.

The Australian government’s plan also calls for expanding its existing GovAI learning and collaboration platform and creating a chatbot called Gov AI Chat, which would give APS employees “access to secure generative AI tools leveraging the government…”
