For years, US defense and intelligence experts have been warning of the threats posed by China’s global ambitions. More recently, these alarms have turned into sirens when Washington almost unanimously made the People’s Republic of China (PRC) the largest national security risk.

In April, the office of the director of the National Intelligence Service’s annual threat assessment identified China’s “urge for world power” at the top of its list of threats. As recently as this month, the Defense Ministry’s report to Congress used clear language to assess the Chinese threat, clearly stating, “… challenge to a stable and open international system.”
