Following Apple’s recent release of the AirTag for Finding Misplaced Objects, security researchers have just succeeded in jailbreaking the new tagging device. The German researcher, Stacksmashing, reported that he hacked into the AirTag’s microcontroller, dumped it, and flashed it again.

By breaking into the microcontroller, Stacksmashing was able to analyze the internal functioning of the product by examining the outsourced firmware. Once accessed, the researcher managed to rewrite the functionality of the device to perform tasks like passing a non-Apple URL in lost mode.
