The next Samsung Galaxy Z Fold phone may have a slightly smaller screen than its previous models, has a smaller battery, and may launch along with a new Galaxy Z Flip in July. The Elec Reports (above XDA developer).
The Galaxy Z Fold 3 is said to have a 7.5-inch main tablet screen and a 6.2-inch screen on the front of the phone. The Elec writes what would be practically the same as the Fold 2’s 7.6 “main display and 6.2” cover display. The Elec According to these screen sizes, they offer the additional benefit of “zero frames”. While the screens might be the same size, the third crease might feel a little smaller as the actual body of the phone might be shrinking.
Compared to the 4,500 mAh battery of the Fold 2, the Fold 3 should get by with a slightly smaller 4,380 mAh battery. Again, this isn’t a dramatic change in size and may not even have a noticeable impact on battery life. However, it is interesting to see if this will affect other changes to the design of the fold.
There are other rumored changes to the fold line, including the ability to add S Pen support, just like the one with the The Galaxy S21 Ultra was released earlier this year. For the Fold, a pen could also pose additional challenges if Samsung tries to integrate the pen memory directly into the phone instead of using an extra case like the Ultra. A hole for a stylus can take up space that can be filled with extra battery capacity or completely removed for an overall thinner phone.
And although The Elec doesn’t mention it at all, so don’t expect any change – thinness is the dimension that could actually matter when it comes to a new Galaxy Fold. Including the additional gap created by the hinge, the Fold 2 is about two S21 Ultra thick when folded. Hopefully, if Samsung doesn’t thin out the rumored Fold 3 to make it easier to hold and pocket it, they’ll consider that next time around: it could also help Samsung compete with newbies like Huawei Mate X2 and Xiaomi’s Mi Mix Fold which both use similar fold designs and are already thinner than the Fold 2.
