Samsung wants you to know that its foldables didn’t flop. In one new blog post, the company said it sold four times more foldable devices in 2021 than it did in 2020. It attributes that success to the launch of the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3, which we identified as a in our own reviews Step towards mainstream usability thanks to their refined designs and lower prices. Samsung says sales of these two devices exceeded the “total cumulative sales of Samsung foldable devices in 2020” in the first month alone.

These are promising metrics for the slow rise of foldable phones, although keep in mind that Samsung isn’t sharing hard sales data. Instead, it pointed to the fact that its gains were higher than predictions by outside analysts who suggested that total shipments of all foldable device manufacturers would decrease 9 million in 2021.

If Samsung thinks that figure is useful enough to top it off – and since the company accounts for about 88 percent of the total foldable markets – we can guess sales were in the high single-digit millions or in the low double-digit millions. Those numbers are expected to increase tenfold by 2023, with Samsung taking a smaller slice of the market as rival manufacturers like Oppo and Huawei join the foldable fun. Also predicted by some for 2023: a foldable iPhonewhich would really boost the segment.

Samsung also says its decision to move ahead with foldable devices early on has paid off in terms of customer conversion. It states that “compared to the Galaxy Note 20 at Samsung, an increase in consumers who switched smartphone brands for the Galaxy Z Flip 3 has increased by 150 percent”.
