Samsung (SSNLF) Electronics is getting close to a big breakthrough in AI memory, with a report saying the company is nearing final certification from NVIDIA (NASDAQ:NVDA) Corporation for its HBM4 chips.

Bloomberg reported that Samsung has moved into the last stage of Nvidia’s qualification process after delivering initial HBM4 samples back in September. People familiar with the matter said Samsung is targeting the start of mass production as early as February, which could open the door to shipments soon after, though the exact timeline is still being finalized.

If certification comes through, it would be a meaningful win for Samsung as it tries to claw back share from rivals SK Hynix and Micron Technology, which currently dominate high-bandwidth memory used in AI accelerators. Investors are clearly watching closely. Samsung shares gave up early gains to trade flat, while SK Hynix fell about 2.6%.

Nvidia’s approval is effectively the gatekeeper for AI memory suppliers, and cracking HBM4 would put Samsung in position to supply future platforms like Nvidia’s Rubin processors. With AI memory prices expected to jump more than 50% this quarter as demand outpaces supply, the timing could be critical.
