Samsung and LG have started production of OLED panels for this year iPhone 13 series, reports South Korean outlet The Elec. As in the previous year, four models are to be presented in the 2021 lineup: 5.4-Inch iPhone 13 Mini, 6.1-inch iPhone 13, 6.1-inch iPhone 13 Pro and 6.7-inch iPhone 13 Pro max.

Samsung makes 120 Hz ProMotion displays for the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max

Samsung is believed to make low temperature thin film transistor (TFT) OLED panels with polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) and 120 Hz support for that iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro max.

Apple reportedly initially planned a high refresh rate for the iPhone 12 Series, but decided against it because it apparently thought a 120Hz screen over 5G connectivity would put too much strain on battery life. This is not a problem with LTPO units.
Samsung has been using LTPO panels since last year Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. The Galaxy S21 The series offers a more efficient version of the technology. LTPO allows a screen to dynamically change its refresh rate based on the content being displayed. This helps to optimize power consumption. For example, the refresh rate can drop to 10 Hz when viewing a static image and increase to 120 Hz when viewing a game.

LG will supply 60 Hz panels for the iPhone 13 mini and iPhone 13

LG appears to be working on traditional Polycrystalline Silicon (LTFT) TFT OLED panels for the iPhone 13 mini and iPhone 13. These models do not expect a high refresh rate and maintain a 60 Hz screen.

The report also suggests that OLED production for the iPhone 13 series started a month earlier than last year, a sign that things are starting to return to normal. Last year’s iPhone 12 lineup was hit hard due to the coronavirus pandemic, so Apple had to delay the launch by a month. This year, the company is expected to return to a launch plan for September.

In total, Samsung is expected to manufacture 80 million display units for the new iPhones, and LG is expected to supply 30 million panels. A previous leak had said BOE would also be part of the iPhone 13 supply chain, but today’s report doesn’t mention that.

Rumors about the iPhone 13: A15 Bionic, up to 1 TB of storage, larger batteries and an improved camera system

According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, all four new models will come with larger batteries. According to a recent report, the A15 bionic chip The iPhone 13 series is said to also go into production. The chip will supposedly be a bit more energy efficient than the A14 SoC that powers the iPhone 12, and this should further help extend battery life.
The new models will also reportedly flaunt a slightly updated design with a smaller notch and an on-display Touch ID. Face recognition goes nowhere, but Apple will apparently be using one smaller VCSEL chip to reduce the size of the system.

Rumors also point to new color options and up to 1TB of storage.
