Samsung is new Galaxy S21 Lineup introduces a new look for the rear camera array, but the change is about more than just aesthetics. The contour cut design also better protects the phone’s cameras from damage in the event you drop your handset.
This is the conclusion reached by Allstate Protection Plans, the electronics insurer formerly known as SquareTrade. As with many new flagship products, AllState introduced a number of Drop tests on the Galaxy S21and found improved protection for the cameras on the new phones. That’s a good thing because the front of the latest Samsung phones is just as susceptible to damage as it was before.
The news of the front of the phones damaged might come as a surprise considering the Galaxy S21 family comes with Corning’s Gorilla Glass Victus. On the Samsung website, Gorilla Glass Victus is described as “the hardest glass on a Samsung smartphone” that promises scratch and damage protection.
That claim failed a 6-foot fall on a sidewalk in the Allstate Protection Plans test. All three Galaxy S21 models suffered cracked screens after a drop Galaxy S21 Ultra suffer the greatest harm. The 6.8-inch phone, the most expensive of the three models, was unusable after a drop that left a cracked screen and loose glass.
The Galaxy S21 Plus also suffered from loose glass and a broken screen when the face was first dropped, while the Galaxy S21 turned out to be the least damaged model. It had a broken screen with raised glass, but the 6.2-inch phone was still functional.
The Galaxy S21 did even better in a second Allstate drop test, which included the phones being dropped back-down, also from 6 feet. In this case, the Galaxy S21 has suffered some scratches but no camera damage.
The cameras on the Galaxy S21 Plus and Galaxy S21 Ultra also remained unscathed in this test, although both phones suffered other damage. The glass panes on the back of the S21 Plus and S21 Ultra shattered on impact.
There’s a reason the Galaxy S21 came out relatively unscathed from this particular test than its more expensive siblings. Samsung has equipped the S21 with a plastic back that is less likely to break than glass. That makes the $ 799 S21 the most durable of the new Samsung phones, while the S21 Ultra appears to be the most susceptible to damage – at least based on Allstate’s tests.
Allstate concludes that while the durability of the camera has been improved, the durability on the front of the Galaxy S21 phones remains unchanged from the previous models. No comparison is made with the iPhone, but when Allstate tested the iPhone 12 Last fall, Apple’s latest devices were named the most durable smartphone it tested.
