A Russian service member within the Kremlin’s Baltic Fleet assisted the Kiev Defense Forces in a covert attack on the cruise missile ship Serpukhov in early April as part of the HUR Operation “Fisherman” by the Ukrainian Military Intelligence. According to a source in Ukrainian intelligence, a Russian missile boat in the Kaliningrad region was severely damaged and caught fire after being hit by the HUR attack on April 7. The Serpukhov was based at the Baltiysk naval base in Russia’s Kaliningrad region, formerly known as Königsberg until its annexation by the Soviet Union in 1946.

At a press conference, a Russian sailor on the Serpukhov with the call sign “Goga” revealed that he was the only crew member who opposed the war with Ukraine. When he tried to resign, his commander referred him to a psychologist and the information was passed on to the FSB and the Russian Prosecutor’s Office. Despite this, Goga was only given a warning after serving 11 years in the Russian Armed Forces and returned to the ship after undergoing tests.

In 2023, Goga joined the resistance forces of the Legion of Freedom of Russia and participated in Operation Rybalka, where he took secret documents, set fire to the ship, and escaped. He is currently in Ukraine and is a member of the Legion of Freedom of Russia. The Project 21631 “Buyan-M” ship Serpukhov, launched in 2015, is a modern missile ship in the Russian Navy and a launch platform for missiles used against Ukraine.

The HUR representative Andriy Yusov stated that the operation was a shock for the enemy and that heads fell off within the FSB as a result of the attack. The Ukrainian Military Intelligence’s Operation “Fisherman” targeted the Serpukhov with the assistance of the Russian service member, leading to significant damage to a Russian missile boat in the Kaliningrad region.

The involvement of a member of the Russian service within the Kremlin’s Baltic Fleet in assisting the Kiev Defense Forces in a covert attack on the Serpukhov highlights the complex dynamics of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Despite opposition to the war from within the Russian military, individuals like Goga are taking bold actions to support Ukraine and resist the aggression of the Russian armed forces.

In conclusion, the cooperation between Ukrainian Military Intelligence and a Russian service member in carrying out the covert attack on the cruise missile ship Serpukhov underscores the strategic tactics employed in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The involvement of Goga, a sailor on the Serpukhov who opposed the war with Ukraine, highlights the personal sacrifices and risks taken by individuals in support of their beliefs and values. The repercussions of the HUR Operation “Fisherman” are evident in the damage caused to a Russian missile boat in the Kaliningrad region, signaling a significant blow to the Russian military presence in the area. This operation showcases the resilience and determination of those who are willing to defy the status quo and challenge the actions of their own government for the greater good.
