The FBI on Monday made a statement in which they confirmed that a new ransomware group called DarkSide was responsible for the ransomware attack that shut down the largest refined oil pipeline system in the United States. The shutdown of the Colonial Pipeline, which is approximately 5,500 miles long and can move up to 3 million barrels of fuel a day between Texas and New York, will cut nearly 50% of the fuel supply on the country’s east coast.
The hacking group claimed the attack was not politically motivated
Although Darkside is known for staying away from organizations from former Soviet bloc nations, he claimed the attack was not political and that the group’s only goal was to make money. The group appears to have a code as it does not target hospitals, nursing homes or educational institutions, but – in Robin Hood style – also donates some of the money to charity.
