RSPCA must deny disturbing photo is AI as ‘crisis’ worsens: ‘Speeding out of control’

The RSPCA in the UK was forced to take the unusual step of denying a photo it shared showing suspected animal cruelty was created using AI, as people found it hard to believe the shocking discovery inside a home was real.

The animal welfare organization released a photo of dozens of dogs crammed into a dilapidated house as it shared a behind-the-scenes look at one of its recent major rescues. It said it had been contacted by a separate charity about a situation where a vulnerable resident was harboring 250 poodle mix dogs.

“The number and living conditions of the dogs quickly spiraled out of control and help was sought for the dogs as soon as anyone found out how the owner had been living,” RSPCA England and Wales said.

After being accused online of sharing an image created using artificial intelligence, the charity said it wished the image wasn’t real.
