Roxanne Fontana and her band Rome’s Azure Sky have released a new single, “Rome’s Azure Sky,” which is a reimagining of The Beatles’ classic song “This Boy.” The band is fronted by Roxanne and her daughter Suki Marie, with Suki being the first person with Down syndrome to release an album as a singer and musician. The name of the band is taken from a poem by Percy Bysshe Shelley and represents the two main members, Roxanne and Suki.

The song “This Boy” was originally released by The Beatles as the B-side to “I Want To Hold Your Hand” and was described by Paul McCartney as a hotel room creation. The song combines the Beatles’ love of ’50s doo-wop with the influence of Smokey Robinson and The Miracles, particularly on John Lennon, who was inspired to write the song as a tribute to Robinson’s three-part harmony style. Roxanne’s cover of the song showcases her talent for reimagining classic tracks with a modern twist while maintaining the original harmonies and spirit of the song.

One challenge Roxanne faced was the male narrative of the song being sung by a woman, but she embraced this challenge by interpreting the lyrics from a different perspective. The band’s lineup includes Roxanne on vocals, Suki on backing vocals and piano, Glenn Burgos on guitar, Tom O’Driscoll on acoustic guitar, Spencer Hannabus on bass, and Steve Hands on drums. More recording sessions are planned before the release of Roxanne’s new solo album in August 2024.

Listeners can stream or download the single on various music platforms. Roxanne Fontana can be found on social media and her website for updates on her music projects. This new release reflects Roxanne’s deep connection to the music of the 1960s and her ongoing passion for reinterpreting classic songs with a fresh perspective.
