Review of the Xen Project | TechRadar

Xen began as a research project at the University of Cambridge led by Ian Pratt, a renowned computer scientist, and his Ph.D. Pupil Keir Fraser. They released the first public version in 2003. Soon after, they founded XenSource, a company that manages Xen and turns it into a competitive enterprise product.

In 2007, Citrix Systems, a well-known American technology company, acquired XenSource. Nonetheless, the open-source version of Xen has continued to be maintained. In 2013, it transferred control of the open-source project to the Linux Foundation, but kept the closed-source enterprise version.
