Residents raise water concerns over proposed Google data center

BOTETOURT COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ) – Opposition to a proposed Google data center in Botetourt County carried into a Western Virginia Water Authority meeting Thursday, when residents urged leaders to reconsider the project’s impact on local water supplies.

Google has purchased more than 300 acres in the Greenfield area for the planned data center. A deal reached late last year allows the facility to initially use water from Carvins Cove. County officials estimate the center could use about 8 million gallons of water per day, making it the largest projected water user in Botetourt County.

Because of that demand, county officials say they will need to explore a second long-term water source. Options could include developing a new source, with Botetourt County and Google expected to share some of the cost.
