Researchers Discover Yet Another Spectre Vulnerability in Intel CPUs

Intel has responded to a new attack method targeting their CPUs, called Indirector, by stating that no new mitigations are needed to address it. The attack, similar to Spectre v2, allows attackers to access sensitive data from a system’s memory. Researchers at the University of California, San Diego discovered that Indirector exploits the Indirect Branch Predictor and Branch Target Buffer on high-end Intel CPUs. They developed a tool to facilitate these attacks and reported their findings to Intel in February 2024.

Intel reviewed the researchers’ report and claims that existing mitigation guidelines for previous attacks should also work against Indirector, such as IBRS, eIBRS, and BHI. The chip giant has informed other affected hardware and software vendors about the issue. The researchers have proposed additional mitigation measures against Indirector attacks to further enhance security.
