OpenAI’s API access has been blocked in China this month, but the AI models are still available to Microsoft Azure customers in the region. Azure, operating through a joint venture, has made it clear that OpenAI service is accessible in China, as reported by The Information. Three Azure customers in China confirmed they still have access to OpenAI models, with two mentioning using the API to train AI models for Chinese clients. Microsoft Azure runs OpenAI service datacenters outside of China to avoid government approval requirements for large language models. Microsoft and OpenAI have not responded to requests for comment on the matter. Last month, Chinese users were informed via email that they were in an unsupported region, and API access would be blocked from July 9. Microsoft had made a significant investment in OpenAI in January 2023, integrating its technology into various products and services.
