Well that escalated. The Wall Street Journal Reports Microsoft could complete the acquisition of Discord for at least $ 10 billion as early as next month.

News that Microsoft is tracking the social media / messaging service arrived earlier this week, and several news outlets independently reported that the talks were still in the early stages and that Discord would most likely go public instead. However, the WSJ report contradicts these earlier stories, claiming the software giant is “in advanced talks” to close a deal. Provided the negotiations don’t fall apart, that deal could close next month.

As noted in the publication, Discord initially focused primarily on video gamers, but the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in a surge in popularity well beyond this one market. Now it is in the midst of a growing selection of popular communication solutions as a solution for people who want to meet virtually in a variety of ways.

With that in mind, it’s likely that Microsoft has plans for Discord that go beyond the obvious Xbox shortcuts, and CEO Satya Nadella stated after the aborted acquisition of Tik Tok that his company is very interested in communities that it has alongside GitHub, Minecraft , could operate, teams and Xbox.
