Report: ByteDance collaborating with Broadcom on development of cutting-edge AI chip

Chinese company ByteDance, which owns TikTok, is partnering with American company Broadcom on an advanced AI chip to secure a stable supply of high-end chips and reduce costs amid trade tensions. The 5-nanometer chip, which will comply with US export restrictions, will be manufactured by Taiwan Semiconductor (TSMC). Production is expected to start once the chip design is finalized, though no timeline has been provided. This collaboration marks the first between a Chinese and American company in advanced chip manufacturing since US export restrictions were imposed. ByteDance is investing in AI chips for its popular apps like its AI chatbot Doubao, similar to ChatGPT. The company has stockpiled Nvidia chips and purchased Huawei’s Ascend 910B chips to mitigate supply chain issues.
