Renting a 448-core super server from AWS is more affordable than you might expect, with no current competition from AMD

A recent report from market intelligence company Liftr Insights highlighted a new Amazon Cloud web service provider instance with an impressive 896 cores, surpassing rival offerings from Azure and Tencent. These cores are likely derived from 8 CPUs and 56 cores Intel Sapphire Rapids configurations, utilizing hyperthreading to achieve 2 vCPUs per physical core.

Cloud providers like AWS leverage vCPUs to offer scalable and powerful computing resources for applications requiring significant computing power. Despite the high number of cores, the new instance only offers 448 physical cores, consistent with AWS’s previous offerings since May 2021. The cost of renting this server ranges from $150 to over $400 per hour, averaging $263.10, making it affordable for demanding database applications like SAP Hana and Oracle.

Liftr’s CEO, Tab Schadt, emphasized the importance of profitable solutions for AWS and the global demand for high-performance computing. The new instance was launched in various locations globally, signaling strong demand in the market. Intel’s Sapphire Rapids Xeon currently dominates the core offerings, with the upcoming AMD Zen 5C EPYC processors expected to compete closely with Intel.

Schadt anticipates further growth in the high-performance computing sector, speculating on the possibility of larger instances in the future. The industry awaits responses from Azure and other cloud providers to this latest development.

Overall, the introduction of the new Amazon Cloud instance with 896 cores showcases the market’s ongoing demand for powerful computing resources. Cloud providers continue to innovate and offer solutions tailored to high-performance workloads, reflecting the evolving landscape of cloud computing services.
