As you may have heard over the past few weeks, Nintendo of America has come under fire for its alleged treatment of part-time and contract workers. NoA actually issued a response to one of those complaints, noting that the video game giant is “fully committed” to providing a welcoming and supportive environment for both employees and contractors, and noting how it takes employment matters very seriously.

Despite this, there are reports growing dissatisfaction behind the scenesand now the former President of Nintendo of America, Reggie Fils-Aimé, has shared his own thoughts on the alleged union troubles during an interview with The Washington Post. He says it’s not the company he knew and it’s not Nintendo he left.

Here’s the full rundown (via Nintendo Everything):

“I read this story. And again, at this point, I’m three years away from being president of Nintendo of America. It’s been a while. As I read the stories and reviews, I realized this isn’t the Nintendo I left. And what I mean by that is that during my time at Nintendo we had regular meetings and events to which our employees – that’s what we called our contract employees – were invited to. Just as a small example, I was famous for having lunch with co-workers bimonthly and quarterly – it was a simple sign-up. And employees were just as invited to register as full-time employees. We made no difference. The reports I hear really don’t seem like the company I was familiar with. I’ll just leave it at that.

“During my time at Nintendo of America, my main focus has been a healthy culture within the company and I know I’ve been able to achieve that. And what is being described here certainly does not appear to be a healthy culture.”

As mentioned by Reggie, he has now been away from the company for more than three years. However, while managing the show, he was known for hosting staff and staff luncheons and strove to maintain a “healthy culture.” This is in stark contrast to some of the reports that are currently popping up online.
