PlayStation 5 is retiring the Accolades system

When the PlayStation 5 launched in 2020, it had taken the world by storm. The powerful console had some of the best features that came with it. One such feature was to give awards to an online player.

The Accolade system was originally intended to help online players support each other in communicating via in-game messages. The system was exclusive to Sony PlayStation and was considered somewhat underrated. Eventually, the company decided to discontinue this feature due to its very infrequent use.

In an official announcement from PlayStation, they said, “In Fall 2022, the Accolades feature will no longer be supported on PlayStation 5. The feature hasn’t been used as much as we expected, so we’re refocusing our efforts. We encourage the community to keep sending each other positive messages.” Remarkably, many players didn’t even know such a feature existed until the news broke.

What is the Accolade system?

When Sony first launched the PlayStation 5, it gave gamers around the world the ability to play online games from any old PS console and also chat with them. Since it was an old feature, PlayStation wanted to try something more, that is, awards.

This new feature allowed players to send feedback to any player the sender worked with. There were three types of awards players could send to their teammates: Helpful, Welcoming, and Good Sport.

In particular, the term is often used in connection with awards and recognition bestowed on an individual throughout their professional career. It is particularly used to refer to prestigious awards and honors that not many people receive.

Although the feature wasn’t that well known to fans, one can guess that the system might come back later with some more features. As Sony is known for its reusability and polishing techniques, gamers may soon find some similar features.
