A recent IBM-commissioned study by Ecosystm reveals that the Philippines lags behind other Southeast Asian countries in AI readiness. Singapore leads the region with 23% readiness, followed by Indonesia at 22%, Thailand at 20%, Malaysia at 19%, and the Philippines at 16%. The study, titled “The AI Readiness Barometer: ASEAN AI Landscape,” categorizes organizations into five stages of AI readiness: traditional, emerging, established, transformative, and AI first.

Generative AI (GenAI) has become prominent, but organizations struggle to fully utilize AI’s potential. Industries like manufacturing, financial services, government, travel, consumer, retail, telecommunications, and media are incorporating AI. However, governance and compliance, essential for AI implementation, are not top priorities for many organizations. Only 13% focus on data governance and compliance, with more emphasis on identifying business use cases, improving data quality, upskilling employees, and adopting new technologies for data management.

The study reveals a gap in strategic planning, as 85% of organizations believe they can benefit from AI, but only 17% have a well-defined AI strategy. This lack of strategy results in a narrow focus on AI’s immediate capabilities rather than its long-term impact. Organizations must develop comprehensive AI strategies to fully realize AI’s potential and achieve transformative impacts across the organization.

As Southeast Asian countries navigate the evolving AI landscape, the Philippines must improve its AI readiness. Organizations in the country need to integrate AI into core operations and decision-making processes to harness its transformative potential effectively.
