Perplexity Expands AI Beyond the Browser With New Mac-Based ‘Personal Computer’ Feature

Perplexity has unveiled a new feature called “Personal Computer” for Mac users, aiming to bring AI assistance directly onto personal devices instead of limiting it to browser-based chatbots. The company says the feature is designed to help users automate complex workflows by allowing AI agents to access local files, native applications, web tools, and cloud services from within a Mac environment.

Most AI assistants today primarily function through cloud-based interfaces. While they are capable of answering questions, generating content, and summarising information, users often need to manually transfer files or switch between applications to complete tasks. Perplexity’s latest move seeks to simplify that process by giving AI deeper integration with the user’s computer.

According to the company, “Personal Computer” is built on top of Perplexity’s existing AI agent platform, which was developed to handle longer and more advanced workflows with minimal user involvement. With the Mac integration, those capabilities now extend to the local device environment.

Perplexity said the AI system can interact with folders, documents, spreadsheets, PDFs, browser-based tools, and native Mac applications. The feature also supports more than 400 connectors, allowing the AI to pull information from multiple platforms and services.
