Perplexity AI this week introduced “Computer,” an AI agent system designed not just to generate answers, but to operate software directly. The system coordinates across dozens of different AI models to interpret screens, reason about tasks and execute multi-step workflows.
Perplexity doesn’t want to be left out of the fray of agents that can autonomously act with minimal direction popularized by viral OpenClaw. The competitive dynamics have sifted from bigger and faster models to systems that can coordinate activities between many different models and agents to accomplish more complicated tasks. Rather than relying on a single frontier model, Perplexity is leaning into orchestration. And orchestration, not scale alone, may define the next phase of AI.
What is Perplexity Computer?
AI assistants are comfortable inside chat boxes. They summarize. They answer. They suggest. But actually doing things, especially between and among different models and systems is harder. To complete a task across multiple applications, an AI system must interpret interface elements, maintain memory, recover from errors and adapt to edge cases. A single large language model struggles with that consistency, but a coordinated set of systems stands a better…
