Partnership Between Perstorp and Intel to Utilize Advanced Liquid Cooling Technology for Synthetic Thermal Management Fluids

Perstorp, a global specialty chemicals innovator under PETRONAS Chemicals Group Berhad (PCG), has partnered with Intel’s Open IP advanced liquid cooling team to create a high-performance synthetic thermal management fluid for data center liquid cooling. This collaboration, initiated in 2022, emphasizes their dedication to promoting sustainable cooling solutions for data centers.

During the COMPUTEX 2024 event in Taipei, Perstorp and Intel introduced their latest advancements. Intel showcased its Gaudi 3 AI accelerator, featuring the innovative Intel SuperFluid Cooling technology utilizing Perstorp’s synthetic thermal management fluid known for its ideal balance of low viscosity and high flash point.

With the increasing demand for AI applications, the technology industry is striving to enhance computing capabilities. Liquid cooling technology plays a crucial role in achieving high-density data center deployments. Various stakeholders, including chip manufacturers, data center operators, and cooling system partners, are collaborating to develop advanced solutions that improve heat transfer efficiency and decrease energy consumption, supporting sustainable technological progress.

Intel’s SuperFluid technology enhances cooling capacity significantly, from 500W per chip in traditional single-phase immersion cooling to 800W. By integrating Perstorp’s advanced fluid with low viscosity properties, along with flow field management, optimized system control, and intelligent cooling distribution unit (CDU) management, chip cooling capability can reach up to 1500W. This innovation meets the demands of future high-performance AI chips while aligning with global data center power usage effectiveness (PUE) standards. The partnership underscores Perstorp’s commitment to advancing thermal management solutions that enhance efficiency and performance in data center environments.

Valentina Serra-Holm, Vice President of Engineering Fluids at Perstorp, emphasized the growing importance of liquid cooling in the AI sector. She highlighted Perstorp’s expertise in engineering fluids and its collaboration with Intel to develop an advanced synthetic thermal management fluid for Intel’s SuperFluid technology. This fluid delivers high thermal performance while maintaining low viscosity, crucial for efficient immersion cooling solutions. Serra-Holm expressed Perstorp’s dedication to promoting collaboration among its value chain partners to advance immersion cooling technologies and drive innovation in thermal management, meeting the increasing demands of AI applications and supporting wider adoption of liquid cooling solutions in high-performance computing environments.

In 2022, Perstorp joined Intel’s Open IP advanced liquid cooling ecosystem, focusing on cold plate and immersion cooling solutions. The collaboration has centered on creating a synthetic thermal management fluid with low viscosity, extended service life, and outstanding dielectric and fire safety properties.
