Oscars says AI actors and writers can’t win awards

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has made it clear that only acting and writing for films made by humans are considered for Oscar consideration.

The academy that administers the U.S. film industry’s most prestigious award issued updated rules on Friday governing what type of work in films and documentaries is eligible for an Oscar, as the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies increases.

In its updated eligibility requirements, the academy specified that only acting must be “demonstrably performed by humans” and that writing “must be written by humans” to be nominated for an award.

The academy called the requirements a “substantial” change to the rules for the Oscars.

The need to designate awards that can only be given to actors and writers who do “human work” is new to the Academy.

In recent months there have been notable examples of the extensive use of AI tools and technologies to replace or replicate human work.
