Have people – and by people we mean Wall Street – complained that the world’s largest bookseller has invested huge sums of money to transform itself into an alternative to driving to Wal-Mart? Or, better yet, did Wall Street complain when the same online retailer Amazon created an IT utility to sell like socks and books and poured even more capital into building a global computing and storage infrastructure?
The honest answer is: Yes, sometimes Wall Street did. And here we are in 2025, with Amazon still the heavyweight in both online retail and cloud computing, with huge media and advertising deals that give the company additional and enormous revenue streams and the opportunity to pull different levers as quarters pass in an ever-changing economy.
