Oracle, a prominent American technology company, has committed to investing over 1 billion dollars (930 million euros) in Spain over the next ten years. This investment will focus on advancing artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing technologies. As part of this initiative, Oracle plans to establish a third cloud region in Madrid to meet the rising demand for AI and cloud services in the region.

The new cloud region in Madrid is intended to support the migration of various workloads to the cloud, catering to both public and private sector entities. By leveraging data, analytics, and AI capabilities, Oracle aims to modernize applications, promote innovation, and ensure compliance with stringent regulations such as the Digital Operational Resilience Act and the European Outsourcing Guidelines. Telefónica Spain has been chosen as the hosting partner for this cloud region.

In addition to this investment, Oracle also operates an EU sovereign cloud with an existing region in Madrid. This specialized cloud service caters to customers dealing with sensitive, regulated, or strategically important data and applications. The EU Sovereign Cloud in Madrid is managed by EU-based staff and adheres to EU guidelines on data sovereignty and privacy.

Spanish authorities, including the Minister of Digital Transformation and Public Administrations, José Luis Escrivá, have lauded Oracle’s investment as a significant step towards promoting innovation and digital transformation in the country. Albert Triola, the national leader at Oracle Spain, emphasized how Spanish businesses and public sector organizations are rapidly adopting cloud technologies, including AI, to drive business performance and resilience. The upcoming public cloud region in Madrid is expected to help these organizations meet data residency requirements and regulatory standards, particularly in industries such as financial services.

Oracle’s investment in Spain aligns with its recent collaborations with Google Cloud and OpenAI for cloud infrastructure. The company’s commitment to investing in Spain follows a similar pledge to invest over 8 billion dollars in Japan over the next decade to support the growing demand for cloud infrastructure and AI technologies in the country.
