Oracle, an American technology company, has announced a significant investment of over $1 billion in Spain, specifically focusing on advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing. This investment will be spread out over ten years and will involve establishing a third cloud region in Madrid to cater to the increasing demand for AI and Oracle cloud services within the country. The new Madrid cloud region is intended to support the migration of diverse workloads to the cloud for both public and private sector entities, aiming to modernize applications and promote innovation through data, analytics, and AI while ensuring compliance with stringent regulations like the Digital Operational Resilience Act and the European Outsourcing Guidelines. Telefónica Spain has been chosen as the host partner for this new cloud region.

In addition to the Madrid cloud region, Oracle also operates an EU sovereign cloud that already has a presence in Madrid. This specialized cloud service is targeted towards customers who handle sensitive, regulated, or strategically important data and applications. Managed by EU-based staff, the EU Sovereign Cloud in Madrid is designed to support workloads that need to comply with EU regulations on data sovereignty and privacy.

Spanish Minister of Digital Transformation and Public Administrations, José Luis Escrivá, expressed enthusiasm about Oracle’s investment in Spain, emphasizing the potential it holds for Spanish companies and public sector organizations to innovate with AI and continue their digital transformation journey. Albert Triola, national leader at Oracle Spain, highlighted the rapid adoption of cloud technologies in Spain and the upcoming public cloud in Madrid’s role in assisting organizations in meeting data residency requirements and regulatory compliance, particularly in critical sectors like financial services.

Notably, Oracle’s investment in Spain aligns with its recent collaborations with Google Cloud and OpenAI for cloud infrastructure enhancements. This announcement follows Oracle’s commitment to invest over $8 billion in Japan over the next decade to support the escalating demand for cloud infrastructure and AI in that region. The move underscores Oracle’s dedication to assisting organizations across various sectors and sizes in accelerating their adoption of cloud technologies to enhance business performance and resilience.
