Oracle introduces new experimental next-generation kernel release

Oracle’s Linux engineers have released the 6.9 kernel for Oracle Linux and are already looking ahead to 6.10 and beyond. This release, UEK-next 6.9, is based on the latest stable kernel version 6.9. Unlike typical enterprise Linux distributions, Oracle offers the choice between RHCK and UEK kernels, with UEK being available since 2010.

The UEK release is created by applying UEK-specific fixes on top of the most recent Linux major release tag, offering features such as soft affinity and Btrfs file system support. Oracle also includes other features not yet included in the mainline kernel, such as the ability to change the kernel scheduler using the pluggable scheduling framework and the program_ext built on the eBPF Kernel Scheduling Feature.

While the 6.10 kernel is still in development at the Release Candidate 6 stage, Oracle’s commitment to UEK-next demonstrates significant differences from the original kernel. Despite maintaining its own distribution since 2006, Oracle has denied intentions to fork RHEL and instead contributes to the OpenELA initiative, co-founded last year.
